Knowing God

"All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance . . . The people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was." - Exodus 20:18-21 NASB

There, in the shadow of the m

ountain, the people of Israel heard the thunder and the trumpet of God's voice. But rather than wanting to know Him more and draw closer to Him, they reacted with great fear and wanted to stand "far away from the mountain." They wanted to distance themselves from God.

There they were, in the presence of Almighty God. What an opportunity! But they were bound with fear and "stood at a distance." In contrast, Moses wanted to go into His presence. God's Sure Word

"Behold, three more kings are going to arise in Persia. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them . . . he will arouse the whole empire against the realm of Greece. And a mighty king will arise . . . his kingdom will be broken up." - Daniel 11:2-4 NASB

On this day in 334 B.C., Greek forces under Alexander the Great met a mighty Persian army under the direction of King Darius III along the Granicus River in present day Turkey. In this clash of empires, the Greeks were outnumbered by more than 10 to 1. Yet Alexander employed a brilliant strategy and won a victory that made him master of a huge empire.

Years earlier, God gave Daniel a vision about these and other related events. The prophecies were so precise that some scholars believe that Daniel's account must have been after the events themselves. But these skeptics fail to understand that we serve a God who is beyond time. As He told Isaiah, He declares "the end from the beginning" (Isaiah 46:10).
